Ealing Hospital is rated “good” for use of resources and “fair” for quality of services - according to the new Annual Health Check: 16 October 2008

Ealing Hospital has received a ‘good’ score for meeting all the requirements in the management of its finances, providing good value for money and consistently meeting financial targets for the past three years.

 

The Trust scored ‘fair’ for the quality of services category in the Health Check which is carried out by the Healthcare Commission to assess Trusts’ performances during the year.

 

Julie Lowe, Chief Executive, said: "The Trust is very aware of the need to focus on improving the quality of services. Since the data used for this assessment was collected we have launched our ‘commitment to care’ campaign. This campaign aims to improve our patients’ experience of the hospital. We have also focused on tackling MRSA and we have seen an on-going reduction in the number of cases.  We are, however, delighted to receive another good rating for the use of resources.”

 

Chairman, Ian Green said: “Our achievement in meeting existing and new national targets is down to the skills and commitment of our staff.  We know the areas in which we need to improve and would encourage patients to feedback their comments through the National Patients’ survey which will help us to make Ealing Hospital the hospital of choice.”

 

Existing national targets

Achieved - Maximum wait of 26 weeks for inpatients

Achieved - Maximum wait of 13 weeks for an outpatient appointment

Achieved – Maintain a two-week maximum wait from urgent GP referral to first out-patient appointment for all urgent suspected cancer referrals

Achieved - Ensure a maximum waiting time of one month from diagnosis to treatment for all cancers

Achieved – Two month GP urgent referral to treatment 

Achieved  - Maximum two week wait for the Rapid access chest pain clinic

Achieved - Ensure all hospital appointments are booked for the convenience of the patient

 

New national targets

Achieved – Increase the participation of problem drug users in drug treatment programmes by 2008

Achieved – Reduce health inequalities by 2010

Achieved – Halting the rise in obesity among children by 2010

Achieved – Reduce the under-18 conception rate by 2010

Achieved – Substantially reduce mortality rates by 2010 from suicide and undetermined injury

Achieved – Improve health outcomes for people with long term conditions by offering personalised care to vulnerable people most at risk; and reduce emergency bed days by 2008

 

The Trust did not achieve the full criteria in:

Year-on-year reductions in MRSA levels;

Maintaining the four-hour maximum wait in A&E from arrival to admission, transfer or discharge;

Sustaining improvements in NHS patient experience;

Participation in audits;

Ensuring that by 2008 nobody waits more than 18 weeks from GP referral to hospital treatment;

Reducing mortality rates by 2010 from heart disease and stroke and related diseases.

The performance ratings are part of the Healthcare Commission’s annual Health Check which is the most comprehensive assessment yet of how the NHS in England is doing.  It measures how well healthcare organisations are performing by answering the questions that matter to patients and the public.  It covers issues such as safety, the outcomes of treatments for patients and the standards of the environment in which care is provided
