Ealing Hospital NHS Trust

The Governors Council

The Governors’ Council has a similar role to a board of governors in other organisations. It acts as a ‘critical friend’, sitting alongside the board of directors and working closely with a range of staff throughout the Trust. The Governors’ Council, who will be elected from the body of the Foundation Trust membership, will be fundamental in shaping the services we provide in order to reflect the needs and priorities of our patients and the local community. By doing so, we aim to offer improved and more responsive patient-centred health care.

The Governors’ Council will:

  • Represent the views of the Trust’s membership

  • Work alongside the board of directors to ensure the Trust takes account of the needs of the local community and upholds the principles and values of the NHS

  • Share local responsibility for the success of Ealing Hospital

  • Act as guardians in ensuring the Trust operates in line with its terms of authorisation

  • Contribute to the development of the Trust as an effective social enterprise by focusing on the wider public interest

  • Promote public health within the activities and services provided by the Trust.

Formal functions include:

  • Appointing the chairman and non-executive directors of the Foundation Trust

  • Approving the appointment of the chief executive

  • Appointing the Trust’s auditor

  • Receiving the annual accounts, the report of the auditor upon them and the annual report

  • Making recommendations for the revision of the Trust’s constitution.

No fees will be paid to members sitting on the Governors’ Council, but they will be able to claim legitimate expenses to cover the cost of travel, childcare or carers.

Members will be nominated/elected to serve on the Governors’ Council for up to three years in the first instance.
