The full range of modern pathology tests is provided for Ealing Hospital patients and local general practitioners. The service is led by a team of specialist consultant pathologists in all disciplines.
The Trust has entered into a service level agreement with Hammersmith Hospital NHS Trust for the provision of laboratory services. Samples from Ealing Hospital and our GP colleagues may now be tested at various sites across the west London area including Ealing Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital depending upon the tests requested.
The Trust has retained local consultant leadership for advice and treatment of our patients at the hospital. All emergency work (urgent blood tests and all blood transfusion work) remains available on site at Ealing Hospital 24 hours a day.
Pathology consists of a number of consultant-led sub-specialities providing:
Diagnostic Haematology
The Diagnostic Haematology department, led by two consultant Haematologists, provides a clinical and laboratory service to diagnose and treat blood disorders and a fully comprehensive blood transfusion service. It participates in the national quality assurance scheme (NEQAS). The high quality laboratory service is available from 9 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays. An emergency on-call service is available at all other times and consultant advice is available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
Routine tests include:
- Blood counts and clotting profiles
- Haemoglobin analysis (HPLC) including universal antenatal screening for critical haemoglobinopathy traits and screening for thrombophilic defects
- Blood film and bone marrow morphology assessed by laboratory and medical staff
- The department supports a comprehensive range of services for the treatment of patients on anticoagulant therapy.
Clinical Haematology
There is also a clinical haematology department with a busy day unit where most patients receive their treatment.
Clinical chemistry
The consultant and clinical scientists provide an analytical and advisory service to diagnose, monitor and treat diseases.
Being acutely aware of the importance of quick access to results, all general chemistries are usually available within four hours of receipt of sample and routine endocrine and tumour marker assays are available the same or next working day.
The maximum waiting time for specialised tests results, analysed in- house, is two weeks
Microbiology
The department of microbiology provides diagnostic bacteriology laboratory services to the Ealing Hospital NHS Trust. The team is led by a consultant medical microbiologist with two junior medical staff, two specialist infection control nurses supported by a number of biomedical scientists (BMSs).
