Rheumatology

The rheumatology department is a small but busy unit that provides outpatient-based assessment and treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders. These are conditions that affect the bones, joints and tissues in the body such as muscles, tendons and ligaments. They include diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, connective tissue diseases and osteoporosis.

How to access the service

GP referral is required.  Urgent referrals can be made by the GP telephoning the rheumatology secretary and following this up with a letter (post or fax).


The rheumatology team

The department comprises two consultants, one of whom has a combined appointment with the Hammersmith Hospital, a specialist registrar and two specialist nurses with interests in inflammatory disease and osteoporosis. 


The department is supported by a GP with a specialist interest in mechanical pain and pain management and has strong links with the community and other members of the musculoskeletal team such as physiotherapy, podiatry and occupational therapy. The department is assisted by a secretary and clerical officer.
