A satellite renal dialysis unit, part of the Hammersmith Hospitals Trust kidney dialysis service, has been operating since 1997. The unit provides 26 state-of-the-art dialysis stations for more stable chronic dialysis patients, operating six days a week with morning and afternoon sessions.
Patients with more severe problems are referred to the Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals.
A normal kidney removes impurities form the blood as it is pumped around the body. For patients suffering from kidney failure the dialysis machine does the same job and this usually involves three four-hour dialysis sessions a week.
Kidney problems are particularly common in the Asian community due to their susceptibility to diabetes. Being able to have dialysis sessions near to home rather than travelling to Hammersmith Hospital is a great benefit for Ealing and Southall-based patients.
